History of the Tenement House

Floriańska 47: Over 700 Years of Krakow History in Your Beer Mug

When you cross the threshold of the tenement house at 47 Floriańska Street, you leave behind the hustle and bustle of tourists and enter a world that remembers the times of kings, great artists, and… Krakow’s first brewers. “Dobry Kumpel” is not just a pub – it’s a place where the history of the Royal City is written in every brick.

A Gothic Heart in the Rhythm of Music

Our cellars are a true journey through time. Their foundations date back to the 14th century, recalling the times of medieval Krakow. The raw brick, arched vaults, and cool walls create a unique atmosphere that no modern design can replicate. Today, the same walls that once listened to the whispers of merchants on the Royal Route vibrate with music and the buzz of the city’s best parties.

Italian Chisel and Royal Splendor

The spirit of artistic bohemia permeated the building long before we built the bar. In the 16th century, the renowned Italian sculptor from Milan, Hieronymus Canavesi, was the master of these walls. It was in these interiors that marble tombstones and sculptures for Polish monarchs and nobility were created.

The building also holds a “golden” chapter in history. It was in this annex that Henryk Sztorc ran his bronze workshop, renovating the famous crown from the dome of St. Mary’s Tower in 1912. It could be said that the splendor of Krakow’s Market Square was born right here.

A Tradition Brewed for Centuries

However, what inspires us most is the long and rich tradition of hospitality. We are not the first to ensure full mugs in this place.

Back in 1691, the building was taken over by Jan Gąsiewicz, a brewer and innkeeper who ran his own brewery in the back of the building. For generations, under the supervision of the Węglarski and Sieńkowski families (also associated with the brewing industry), the building thrived, serving as a haven for thirsty Krakow residents. We continue this 300-year-old tradition by serving the finest beverages.

Modernity within old walls

The contemporary history of tenement house no. 47 is inextricably linked to the Voigt family – pioneers of Polish optics, who founded their company here in 1928. This is proof that our address has always attracted people with passion and vision.

Today, at “Dobry Kumpel,” we combine respect for this incredible past with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. We invite you to a place where you can see the world from a better perspective and drink in the health of walls that have lived for centuries.
